Senate Releases Health Reform Bill
June 2009
On June 9, Senator Kennedy released draft legislation providing health insurance to those without it. This bill also contains a robust section entitled "Improving the Health of the American People" that includes many provisions that would strengthen population-based disease prevention and local health departments.

President's Budget Released, NACCHO Seeks Funds for H1N1 Influenza Response
May 2009
On May 7, the Obama Administration released its first complete budget, with $78.4 billion in spending for Health and Human Services. The House also included $350 million for state and local pandemic preparedness in its supplemental war spending bill, as advocated for by NACCHO.

Details of Stimulus Funding Released; Tobacco Regulation Bill Passes House
April 2009
The Obama Administration released details of $300 million in stimulus funding for immunization. The House of Representatives passed legislation allowing the FDA to regulate tobacco products, and NACCHO kicks off its Local Health Department Congressional Action Network.

NACCHO Testifies on FY10 Appropriations
March 2009
NACCHO Executive Director Robert M. Pestronk testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education on FY10 appropriations for public health programs. Also, two public health advocates are nominated to head the Food and Drug Administration.

Economic Stimulus Passes with Funds for Public Health
February 2009
The public health community joined together to advocate successfully for the inclusion of funds for prevention and wellness in the economic stimulus bill, signed by President Obama on February 17.
