Model Policy for a Tobacco-Free Environment in Minnesota's K-12 Schools


In order to promote a tobacco-free environment in primary and secondary schools around Minnesota, the Public Health Law Center and the Start Noticing Coalition developed a comprehensive model K-12 tobacco-free policy.  The model policy includes the following key components:
o    Provides a definition of tobacco products to include current and future tobacco products.  
o    Prohibits the following items on campus (inside or outside) and at off-campus, school-sponsored events:
  • tobacco products and tobacco-related devices,
  • imitation tobacco products, 
  • lighters,
  • and electronic cigarettes.
o    Prohibits accepting any donations or curriculum from any tobacco-related industry.
o    Prohibits any promotion of tobacco products.
