Evidence-Based Tobacco Control and Prevention Recommendations from the Community Guide

The Guide to Community Preventive Services (Community Guide) is a free, online resource that can help public health professionals learn about evidence-based programs and policies. Systematic reviews are used to answer these questions:

  • Which program and policy interventions have been proven effective?
  • Are there effective interventions that are right for my community?
  • What might effective interventions cost; what is the likely return on investment?

The National Association of County and City Health Officials has created a document that summarizes the Community Guide recommendations for tobacco control and prevention. These include recommendations to:

  • Increase cessation and reduce initiation of tobacco use,
  • Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, and
  • Restrict minors' access to tobacco products.
