Extreme Heat Media Toolkit

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. Heat waves are already the most deadly weather-related exposure in the U.S., and account for more deaths annually than hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. Children and older adults are at greater risk from heat. To help provide downloadable and customizable materials for local health departments and other organizations to assist with ongoing outreach efforts to those most vulnerable to extreme heat events, the CDC Climate and Health Program has developed an Extreme Heat Media Toolkit. An important goal of this toolkit is to provide downloadable and customizable materials for local health departments and other organizations, assisting ongoing outreach efforts to those most vulnerable to extreme heat events. The toolkit features information about how to communicate with communities about strategies for staying cool, staying hydrated, and staying informed. Additionally, information is provided specifically for individuals that are aged 65 and older, infants and children, people with chronic medical conditions, low-income populations, outdoor workers, and athletes.
