A Facilitator's Guide - Heat & Health: A Workshop for Community Leaders

Description:

This facilitator's guide includes all of the materials one would need to lead a workshop on heat and health in the context of climate adaptation. Faciltators have access to a sample agenda, handouts, materials to facilitate activities (e.g., case studies), and Powerpoint slides with talking points. The guide also provides a variety of resources for community-based outreach, inviting facilitators to modify the materials in the context of their local needs and assets.

The 2-hour workshop is suitable for a variety of social service providers and community leaders. It was developed and evaluated in spring/summer 2012 with over 60 participants representing agencies and non-profits in Detroit, Michigan who work with aging, homeless, and other vulnerable populations. The goals of this workshop are threefold:

1) To share information about heat effects on health and misconceptions regarding health behavior during heat events (e.g., myths about cooling centers, misuse of fans)

2) To provide information about local and national resources including formal and informal programs to support social service clients, potential policies for heat preparedness, and general resources for risk communication or management

3)  To solicit suggestions for improving local interventions during heat events
