The American Hiking Society hosts two major programs, National Trails Day (NTD) and Volunteer Vacations, that promote physical activity by encouraging trail use. Through NTD events, thousands of outdoor enthusiasts celebrate trails and learn about the health benefits of hiking in conjunction with numerous events sponsored by trail clubs, retailers, federal agencies, municipal parks, land trusts, and businesses. Volunteer Vacations fosters public land stewardship and provides volunteers with opportunities to give back to the trails they love while hiking over miles of terrain across the US.
The American Hiking Society encourages local public health agency staff and health practitioners to become involved with their trail events and volunteer opportunities by promoting the health benefits of trail use, conducting health screenings, and helping even participants create fitness plans. Communities can tie their activities to these events in order to reach broad community audiences and create valuable public-provate partnerships.
