Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Massachusetts Immunization Program
State: MA
Date Added: 11/11/2009
Themes: Communications - Priority Groups,Vaccine Planning and Administration
Issue Summary: Massachusetts Immunization Program targets high-risk children
Description of Issue(s):

In Massachusetts, we don't have a county health system so virtually 100 percent of children have a medical home in Massachusetts and we've been working primarily with the providers.

Actions taken to address the issue(s): We started primarily looking at our most fragile children by targeting our long-term care facilities for children. So these are children with very complex medical problems and our children's hospitals to make sure we were getting the vaccine out to our highest risk children. We're also working with other state agencies, particularly the Department for Developmental Disabilities and making sure that all the children enrolled in their programs will get vaccinated with H1N1 vaccine. We've recently started providing some vaccine to city and town health departments.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: Right now, they are only getting very small amounts of vaccine but a number of them are looking at their schools and programs of schools that serve very fragile children. So we're really trying to make sure that we reach these kids through a variety of settings. Right now we're not able to evaluate how successful it is but we're hoping to start getting some information about that.
