Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Chicago Department of Public Health
State: IL
Date Added: 11/25/2009
Themes: Vaccine Planning and Administration
Issue Summary: Dedicated vaccination clinic leadership ensures smooth flow at Chicago clinics.
Description of Issue(s): As Chicago is operating six clinic sites per day (3 days per week), staffing has been a challenge.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): We have given our staff the flexibility to choose the clinic location at which they will work as a means to help ensure greater levels of volunteerism and participation among the staff. One issue that arose early on was the need to have dedicated clinic leadership (clinic coordinator, operations support coordinator, clinical coordinator, supply manager and situation unit leader) at each of the sites.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: Dedicated leadership ensures that a core leadership team knows and understands the issues, intricacies and maximum functioning of that particular site. This has ensured that no matter how the staffing pattern of each clinic changes from day-to-day, consistent clinic leadership helps to maintain optimal functioning of the site. We now have our busiest sites averaging 1200 to 1500 vaccinations per site within a 5 hour timeframe.
