||Chicago Dept. of Public Health uses a variety of risk communication/health information messaging.
|Description of Issue(s):
||CDPH has implemented a full onslaught of delivery mechanisms for emergency and risk communication messages. These delivery mechanisms include TV, radio broadcasts, advertising, press conferences/media appearances, DVD production, translation and community message dissemination. CDPH’s Public Information Office is working in collaboration with CDPH’s Emergency Preparedness division and Medical section to develop information messages aimed at delivering CDPH’s messages throughout the City of Chicago, in an effort to minimize confusion, panic and lack of knowledge around H1N1 recommendations and protective measures.
|Actions taken to address the issue(s):
||CDPH has recently completed the development of these messages. Messages are being displayed across the city on the interior of CTA buses and rail line cars, as well on the exterior of CTA buses via taillight bus displays. CDPH messages are also going up on 350 JC DeCaux bus shelters across the city.
CDPH has also worked with Clear Channel Communications to have messages broadcast on radio stations throughout the City and we are in the final stages of solidifying a partnership with NBC5 Chicago/Telemundo to develop powerful marketing concepts that will generate widespread awareness of CDPH’s H1N1 message to the Chicago Community. As with the Spring H1N1 response, CDPH’s Commissioner is make media appearances on local TV stations to promote H1N1 messages and recommendations.
CDPH has developed a community outreach team to coordinate and manage speaking engagements that are being requested by a myriad organizations and groups including aldermanic offices, community groups, schools, faith-based organizations, minority groups and private sector groups. This team is being led by a Community Liaison Officer, who is also responsible for coordinating with CDPH’s Public Information Office to ensure messages delivered and power points used for speaking engagements are consistent and appropriately relay the CDPH message. In an effort to enhance community outreach efforts, CDPH has engaged a video production company and developed an informational DVD regarding protective measures the public should take to guard against H1N1. This DVD is shown by the community outreach team for use at speaking engagements.
