Public Health Use and Distribution of Antivirals: NACCHO Think Tank Meeting Report

In June 2010, NACCHO convened 14 public health professionals for a think tank meeting to discuss the role of local health departments (LHDs) in influenza antiviral use and distribution and experiences managing antivirals during H1N1. This report contains 1) major meeting discussion themes, 2) potential roles for and needs of LHDs in managing antivirals, 3) actions NACCHO and other partners can take to help strengthen the LHD role in guiding and managing antiviral use and distribution, and 4) tools and resources LHDs used during H1H1 to aid antiviral distribution and dispensing. Resources from Demonstration Sites

The City of Milwaukee Health Department (WI) and the North Carolina Public Health Regional Surveillance Team (PHRST) 6, in collaboration with the Buncombe County Health Center (NC), conducted surveys to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of providers and other prescribers on antiviral prescription use during seasonal and pandemic influenza. In addition, both demonstration sites conducted exercises to practice and test antiviral mass distribution and dispensing plans. Survey and exercise findings from these demonstration sites were presented in a webinar on July 23, 2008.

Additionally, in April 2009, NACCHO funded the Jefferson County Health Department in Alabama (JCHD) to assess the replicability of the survey tool developed by North Carolina PHRST 6/BCHC and gather similar KAP data from providers and other prescribers in their jurisdiction.  Products from JCHD included a revised survey tool and associated findings from providers surveyed.
