Infectious Disease Prevention and Control


NACCHO is strengthening local health departments' (LHDs') capacity to respond to and control infectious diseases. Cases or suspected cases of new and emerging infections are likely to appear in community hospitals, private provider offices, and community health centers, making LHDs frontline responders. Approaches to preventing infectious disease or controlling its spread depend on identifying causes and understanding how they can most effectively be addressed.  More »

This presentation, originally featured at the 2011 NACCHO Annual Conference, describes substantial budget cuts and consequential, unusual management decisions that impacted Maricopa County Department of Public Health’s tuberculosis program, school-based influenza activities, and policy efforts. On November 16-17, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine hosted a free online continuing medical education opportunity on the top developments and topics in infectious disease prevention and control. NACCHO and CDC Team up to Improve Antibiotic Use

November 14-20 marked Get Smart about Antibiotics Week. CDC, NACCHO, and other partners promoted appropriate antibiotic use in inpatient and outpatient settings with a special focus on nursing homes and long-term care facilities. CDC's  Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work and Get Smart for Healthcare programs are specifically designed to educate consumers and healthcare providers about appropriate use of antibiotics.

Resources for Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients

Ongoing outbreaks resulting from unsafe injection practices in outpatient oncology settings have highlighted the role of health departments in investigating, responding to, and preventing such infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), through the Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients program, has developed the following resources that local health departments can share with healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers to help reduce the risk of developing potentially life-threatening infections during chemotherapy treatment:

New NACCHO Adult Hepatitis B Vaccination Resources Now Available
