Infectious Disease Prevention and Control

NACCHO is strengthening local health departments' (LHDs') capacity to respond to and control infectious diseases. Cases or suspected cases of new and emerging infections are likely to appear in community hospitals, private provider offices, and community health centers, making LHDs frontline responders. Approaches to preventing infectious disease or controlling its spread depend on identifying causes and understanding how they can most effectively be addressed.  More »

Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)

The CDC recently released a Vital Signs report about the rise of CRE in U.S. medical facilities. A digital press kit featuring text, graphics, CDC director and laboratory videos, hyperlinks, quotes, and other resources was launched with the report. A variety of related educational materials and information are available on Medscape (for clinicians), WebMD (for consumers), and CDC's Safe Healthcare Blog.

Visit CDC's CRE webpage for news and resources on this healthcare-associated infection (HAI).

Novel Coronavirus

LabMultiple countries have reported recent laboratory-confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection to the World Health Organization. In light of these developments, updated guidance has been posted on the CDC coronavirus webpage. Additional details are available in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report article "Severe Respiratory Illness Associated with a Novel Coronavirus - Worldwide, 2012-2013."

Safe Injection Practices

Potential patient exposure to HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C due to accidental reuse of insulin pens highlights persistent unsafe injection practices throughout the U.S. Outbreaks resulting from unsafe injection practices in hospitals and outpatient settings have highlighted the impact to and involvement of state and local health departments.

In response to one of these outbreaks, NACCHO recently wrote a letter urging the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to reaffirm the importance to all of its health care facilities in achieving timely and complete reporting of reportable diseases and conditions. The full text of the letter is available here.

The CDC and Safe Injection Practices Coalition have new materials for healthcare providers to learn about safe injection practices. Resources include:
