Adolescent Health

NACCHO has a long history of helping LHDs address adolescent mortality and morbidity.  The Adolescent Health Program focuses on injury prevention, mental and reproductive health, HIV and STD prevention, tobacco prevention, and obesity prevention.  The goals of the program are to build NACCHO's capacity to address adolescent health needs and to enhance LHDs' ability to identify and meet the health needs of adolescents in their communities.

Brevard County’s Managed School Health Program serves approximately 85,000 students. Objectives of the program include: safe medication administration; reduced numbers of students reporting illness; increased health interventions to support overall student and school performance; appropriate health protocols; and appropriate first aid and emergency responses. Managing resources by striking a balance between demand and level of care represents a true collaboration between the school district and health department.

For more information on the program, visit http://doh.state.fl.us/chdBrevard/index.htm. To view the program’s NACCHO Model Practice page, visit http://www.naccho.org/topics/modelpractices/database/index.cfm.

September Topic: Access to Care
7359768medicalsupplies

As a result of no longer being eligible for their parent’s health care plans, being too old for government programs such as SCHIP, taking jobs with no health insurance coverage or a lack of experience dealing with health insurance, adolescents are particularly susceptible to lacking access to health care coverage.

LHDs have an integral role in efforts to provide access to care for adolescents. LHDs have the opportunity to be the strongest advocates for providing care to adolescents who lack access to health care. LHDs in many cases may be the last line of defense in providing the care that many adolescents need but are unable to receive.
