Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities

NACCHO received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support local health departments (LHDs) prevent birth defects and developmental disabilities. Birth Defects Spotlight

The Suffolk County (NY) Health Department's Interconception Care Collaboration Project connects postpartum health education with family planning health education. Interconception care helps families reach their childbearing objectives and avoid unintended pregnancies. It also provides counseling to achieve healthy birth intervals and optimum pregnancy outcomes. More »

Preconception Care: Healthy Women Today, Healthy Babies Tomorrow

This issue brief describes preconception care and its role in promoting optimal health for women and infants. Prepared by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and NACCHO, the brief provides general information on preconception and interconception care and offers examples of federal, state, and local initiatives that promote preconception care and interconception care. A Report of the CDC/ASTDR Preconception Care Workgroup and the Select Panel on Preconception Care

This report provides recommendations to improve the health of women and couples before conception of a first or subsequent pregnancy. Since the early 1990s, guidelines have recommended preconception care, and reviews of previous studies have assessed the evidence for interventions. Click here for the report.


LHDs and Preconception Care

LHDs ensure the delivery of preconception care services to promote the health and well-being of women and infants. Where services are not directly provided, LHDs work through a system of collaboration and referrals to other community healthcare providers to deliver the services. More »
