With funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NACCHO supports LHDs in their efforts to prevent birth defects and developmental disabilities.
The goal of the project is to provide information and analyses for LHDs on preconception care and other methods of preventing birth defects and developmental disabilities.
The objectives to achieve this goal include:
- Provide updates on resources, job postings, funding opportunities, key legislative activities, and other birth defects/preconception care–related events through Public Health Dispatch;
- Supply updates, resources, and general information on preconception care and the prevention of birth defects and developmental disabilities on the NACCHO Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (BDDD) Web site;
- Collect and disseminate educational information and resources via the NACCHO BDDD e-mail distribution list;
- Help local health officials develop policy statements that serve as the basis for NACCHO action;
- Research and identify potential funding opportunities for birth defects/preconception care activities and disseminate them through the NACCHO Foundation Funding Guide;
- Identify state and local health officials or programmatic staff to develop a Preconception Care Advisory Group;
- Create a distribution list of LHD contacts engaged in the delivery of preconception-care services by querying NACCHO membership and accessing existing resources; and
- Develop and publish issue briefs on preconception care highlighting current research, information, and examples of state and local practices.
