» Building Healthier Communities Compendium Series

In 2004, NACCHO released a publication entitled Building Healthier Communities: Local Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs. This compendium highlights local health department (LHD) programs that address nutrition and physical activity as well as environmental and policy changes in these areas. The profiles include the lessons learned, challenges faced, and future plans of self-selected LHDs.

In June 2005, a follow-up publication — Building Healthier Schools: Local Collaborations to Promote Nutrition and Physical Activity — was released. The goal of this second volume is to provide local health departments with case studies of peers who have developed strong relationships with the educational community to combat the issue of poor nutrition and physical inactivity. Each case study includes lessons that LHDs have learned through their collaborative efforts as well as success stories and challenges faced during the development and implementation of their health promotion programs.

The third volume in the series –– Building Healthier Communities: Local Collaborations to Promote Healthy Aging –– has been released. This compendium features the collaborative efforts of LHDs with area agencies on ageing and other ageing organizations to promote healthy ageing. Topics include Medicare Part D education, HIV prevention, physical activity, nutrition, mental health, and caregiver support.
