Local Health Department Receiving Technical Assistance: Suffolk County Health Department, NY


The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is currently offering technical assistance support to local health departments to improve their capacity to develop or enhance health promotion programs for people living with disabilities through coordination of existing health department and community services.

Background:

Approximately 42,000 of elderly residents in Suffolk County have a disability. The Suffolk County Health Department and its community partners are conducting a project to promote the health and well-being of people with disabilities funded by NACCHO. 

Project Activities:

Suffolk County Health Department is receiving technical assistance from Akron Health Department and is planning to be trained in the Healthy Lifestyles curriculum and implement the Healthy Lifestyles program.

Project Update:

Suffolk County Health Department planned a Healthy Futures Summit held at the Suffolk County Community College. The Injury Prevention Committee initiated the goal of preventing falls in the elderly population. The Injury Prevention Committee included working with the elderly along with nurses and several other members of the community to outline specific information that can be utilized to prevent falls in the elderly population.
