Adolescent HIV Prevention Demonstration Sites

NACCHO's Adolescent HIV Prevention Project provides school and community HIV prevention programs with financial and technical support from innovative local health department (LHD) programs.

In 2004–2005, with funding from the Division of Adolescent and School Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NACCHO provided $20,000 to the City of Stamford (CT) Department of Health and Human Services and the City of Portland (ME) Public Health Division to expand their HIV prevention efforts in schools, focusing on high-risk youth in grades 7–12. 

In 2005–2006, NACCHO provided $12,000 to Collier County Health Department in Florida and Washoe County District Health Department in Nevada to:

• Plan and implement an innovative means by which to reach adolescents at highest risk of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs); and
• Collect preliminary performance and evaluation data on the intervention.

In 2006–2007, NACCHO awarded $16,000 to the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department, TX; Englewood Health Department, NJ; and Pinellas County Health Department, FL to pilot an intervention to improve adolescent health. The intervention was focused on HIV, STI, and/or teen pregnancy prevention.  The community, in collaboration with other groups, developed a strategic plan to enhance its adolescent HIV, STI, and teen pregnancy prevention efforts.

In 2007–2008, NACCHO awarded $15,000 to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Riverside County Health Department to support the development or enhancement of a collaborative HIV/STI and/or unintended pregnancy prevention strategic partnership addressing adolescents disproportionately affected by HIV, STIs and/or unintended pregnancy.
