Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Napa County Health and Human Services Agency Public Health Division
State: CA
Date Added: 11/11/2009
Themes: Medical Care and Countermeasures
Issue Summary: Partnership with local safety net clinic to dispense SNS tamiflu
Description of Issue(s): Maintaining access to tamiflu for the uninsured and those without prescription coverage for all patients regardless of provider and without overburdening the small local health department.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): Establish a unique partnership that provides access while minimizing logistical hurtles for the LHD:
Napa County does not have a county pharmacy.? In order to ensure that persons with prescriptions for tamiflu who cannot obtain the medication from a 3rd party provider, Public Health partnered with our local FQHC safety net clinic, Community Health Clinc Ole (CHCO) and its pharmacy to dispense SNS tamiflu through their pharmacy.? Vouchers attesting that the patient has an indication for tamiflu and is unable to obtain in elsewhere were sent to local medical providers. Those providers can then send patients with a prescription and a voucher to CHCO where the pharmacist will dispense SNS tamiflu to the patient.? The pharmacy provides Public Health with a detailed records of SNS tamiflu dispensed.?
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: This partnership allows a small health department to ensure access to the entire population without the necessity of managing SNS distribution to multiple sites or entering in to agreements with the few chain pharmacies in the county.
We successfully developed and enacted an MOU and are maintaining needed access to tamiflu for the uninsured.
We successfully reached out to all potentially affected medical providers
We created a system for distribution and tracking of SNS resources via a public private partnership.
