LHD sponsors a parade float to publicize H1N1 prevention messages |
| Description of Issue(s): |
Lenoir County Health Department sponsored a float in three Christmas parades in Lenoir County towns (LaGrange, Pink Hill and Kinston). |
| Actions taken to address the issue(s): |
The theme of our float was Gifts
of Prevention (against H1N1). We had a big gift box in the center of
the float with a tag labeled H1N1 prevention gifts and a big red bow.
Santa's elves walked beside the float carrying informational signs. Some staff were dressed as gift boxes with informational tags. These sayings included "Sneeze in your sleeve," "Use tissues," "Stay home if sick," "Get H1N1 vaccinations," "Use hand sanitizer." Mrs. Claus rode on the float announcing all the prevention rules and asking people not to send her husband home sick. |
| Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: |
We received third place in Pink Hill, and a plaque for most creative in Kinston. Unfortunately our name was mistakenly left off the LaGrange roster so we could not compete. We were told later we would have won first place had our name been on the roster but we were satisfied that our message had been received.
The parades were aired on a local TV
cable station TACC 9. I was Mrs. Claus and I still have people coming up to me and complementing our float. It makes me proud.
