Injury and Violence Prevention Capacity Assessment
Injuries and violence are a significant public health problem because of the impact on the health of Americans, including premature death and disability, and the burden placed on the health care system. Given the public health burden of injuries and violence, local health departments (LHDs) play a critical role in protecting and improving community safety in coordination and collaboration with local, state, and national efforts. NACCHO and the Safe States Alliance are committed to increasing the quantity and quality of LHD IVP efforts.
Local Injury and Violence Prevention Capacity Assessment Tool
In 2010, a joint workgroup of NACCHO and the Safe States Alliance developed Standards and Indicators (S&I) for a model LHD injury and violence prevention (IVP) program. The S&I identify 12 standards that LHDs should meet in order to support effective injury and violence prevention activities.
Using the Assessment Tool, LHDs will be able to assess LHD IVP efforts, while also taking into account the role of local partners in addressing the causes of injury and violence. The purpose of the Assessment Tool is to (1) provide LHDs and their partners with an opportunity to assess local capacity to address the causes of injury and violence across the lifespan; and (2) identify potential areas for strengthening the organizational and system supports needed to improve local capacity.
In spring 2012, NACCHO initiated a pilot project for the Assessment Tool with nine LHDs. The pilot sites provided NACCHO with critical feedback that was essential for optimizing the utility of the tool for LHDs. Based on the feedback and experience of our pilot sites, the Assessment Tool was revised to better serve the needs of LHDs. The revised Assessment Tool better assesses the collective capacity of the array of community partners that contribute to injury and violence prevention across the lifespan.
