Goals

Goals and Objectives

Goals: Reduce fatalities and injuries associated with impaired driving, identify effective demonstration site programs in rural communities, and document and disseminate information on these programs.

Three objectives to achieve this goal are identified below. Each objective corresponds with one year of the project.

Objective 1: Identify rural communities that are over-represented in alcohol-related traffic fatalities and injuries, and are also involved in impaired driving prevention, to serve as demonstration sites.

NACCHO identified communities involved in impaired driving prevention, encouraged rural LHDs to apply to serve as demonstration sites, and selected four rural LHDs to serve as demonstration sites.

Objective 2: Implement a demonstration site project in rural communities that will identify effective strategies, resources, and tools to address impaired driving.

NACCHO entered into a contract with four LHDs (Carrol County Health Department, MD; Garret County Health Department, MD; Fargo Cass Public Health, ND; and Fillmore and Houston County Health Departments) to augment or expand their existing impaired driving prevention initiatives. The demonstration site grants ran for an 18-month period, from July 2006 through December 2007.

Objective 3: Develop tools and resources to address impaired driving using information from the demonstration sites.

NACCHO is in the process of developing a report detailing the work of the demonstration sites as well as challenges they encountered and implications for other LHDs and implementing impaired driving prevention strategies. NACCHO anticipates releasing the report in July 2008.
