Rural Activity

Demonstration Site Project

For the past three years NHTSA has teamed with NACCHO to address impaired driving through the Impaired Driving Prevention in Rural Communities Project. For the project, NACCHO and NHTSA worked with four local health departments to enhance their impaired driving prevention activities and identify strategies and approaches most suitable for rural communities.

NACCHO awarded between $8,000 to $20,000 to Carroll County Health Department, MD; Garret County Health Department, MD; Fargo Cass Public Health, ND; and Fillmore and Houston County Health Departments, MN to reduce fatalities and injuries associated with impaired driving in their communities. The demonstration site grants ran for an 18-month period, from July 2006 through December 2007. NACCHO is in the process of developing a report detailing the work of the demonstration sites as well as challenges they encountered and implications for other LHDs and implementing impaired driving prevention strategies. NACCHO anticipates releasing the report in July 2008.
