The Western New York Public Health Alliance, Inc. (WNYPHA) Rural Advanced Practice Center (APC) is a resource for rural public health departments nationwide developing tools to be used in rural public health emergency planning and providing unique insight on the development and maintenance of successful public health department collaboration and regionalization. How the Western New York Public Health Alliance APC is Addressing the APC Focus Areas: Workforce development and training: Rural Preparedness Planning Guide: This guide highlights findings from a panel of local health department directors and emergency responders. They discuss their experiences handling population surge and to identify guidelines other rural responders might use to improve their preparedness work. Mass Evacuation to Rural Communities: Two one-hour live Video Training Broadcasts related to rural public health preparedness. Developing integrated communications and information systems: Urban to Rural Evacuation Tool: An online map-based tool that estimates numbers of evacuees expected to arrive in counties surrounding major U.S. cities in the event of a dirty bomb, pandemic flu, or chemical incident. Recent hurricanes and other disasters demonstrated that urban citizens may need to evacuate, and many of those citizens are likely to evacuate to a rural community. This evacuation modeling tool is a web-based application that predicts rural and suburban population surge following potential urban disasters and provides information on county resources.
