Regional Public Health

The need for regional preparedness has been demonstrated through both actual terrorist events and local drills and exercises that have quickly overwhelmed the capacity of individual local public health systems. It is necessary to build response capacity across jurisdictional boundaries or organizational capacities. The need for a method or system to assist in planning and to assess the planning is critical.

Project Public Health Ready (PPHR) has begun to address these needs by performing the following tasks:

  • Creating the PPHR Regional Criteria;
  • Accepting regional sites into its pilot program; and
  • Sponsoring a collaborative development process (in collaboration with The de Beaumont Foundation) working with the pilot regional sites to evaluate the PPHR Regional Criteria and begin the development of guidance for local health departments that are considering regional approaches to preparedness.
