This webinar will focus on the findings from a recent retrospective study that explored surge experienced in hospitals during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. The study, requested by the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, was a collaborative effort involving the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Office of the HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, and academic experts.

Findings that will be discussed in the webinar include:
•  Magnitude of H1N1 surge in U.S. hospitals and emergency departments
•  Impact of H1N1 on surge on in-hospital quality
•  Characteristics of hospitals associated with surge

These topics, combined with other findings, will highlight the implications of pandemics on hospital preparedness. These findings will also help prepare public health and healthcare facilities to better predict, plan for and respond to future pandemics.

This conference will provide participants with tools and information to improve organization and community recovery plans. This year's conference features panels comprised of speakers from healthcare, education, business, the access and functional needs community, the military, and local government. Panelists will examine a broad spectrum of recovery topics among the diverse sectors, including impacts of disasters on infrastructure, service demands, business continuity, corporate branding, community spirit, mental resilience, and financial strength. Speakers will address challenges, initiatives, and successes, as gleaned from surviving Hurricane Sandy, the Aurora shooting, the Boston Marathon bombings, the North Ridge earthquake, the Reno air show crash, the Joplin tornado, the San Diego fires, and more. Continuing education credits are available for nurses, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and business continuity professionals; credentialing may be offered for more professions as well, upon request. NACCHO and the National Public Health Information Coalition will host a webinar from 2-3PM EDT on Thursday, May 9. This webinar will focus on data from a series of three Harvard polling projects that provide valuable insight into the public's likely response to a mass prophylaxis program in the case of an anthrax attack. The polls are built around a "worst-case scenario" in which cases of inhalation anthrax are discovered without an identified location and the entire population of a city/town is asked to receive antibiotic prophylaxis within a 48-hour period. Speakers will examine the critical elements of the public response and public health communication in a bioterrorist event. More »

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is presenting the webinar Mass Casualty: Support and Response on Tuesday, April 23.

This 60-minute webinar will help support response efforts and promote responders’ individual and peer group resiliency. First, speakers will share information about reactions that responders may be having as a result of the recent mass casualty events in Boston. Participants will also learn about related resources available through SAMHSA. We encourage all MRC leaders and volunteers as well as PHS MHT responders to participate, specifically those who assisted in response to the Boston marathon attacks.

Featured speakers include CDR Jeffrey Coady, Psy.D., SAMHSA Region V Administrator; Heather Oglesby, SAMHSA Project Officer; and CDR Jamie Seligman, SAMHSA Project Officer. The 2013 Public Health Preparedness Summit was March 12-15 in Atlanta, and brought together public health and healthcare professionals, emergency managers, and other leaders to collaborate, learn, and share best practices. More than 150 sessions explored areas including mass prophylaxis and catastrophic preparedness, community resilience, biosurveillance, volunteer management, administrative preparedness, public health law, and crisis standards of care.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Disaster Response Template Toolkit features public education materials that disaster behavioral health response programs can use to create resources for reaching people affected by a disaster. More »

A new toolkit of prepared cell phone text messages advising people how to protect their health after a
disaster is available now through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These messages support state and local emergency managers in disaster response. Emergency responders can use the messages as they are or tailor the messages based on specific local needs. The toolkit currently features text messages relevant to hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. More »

The Texas Health Institute on behalf of the HHS Office of Minority Health developed a toolkit entitled "Guidance for Integrating Culturally Diverse Communities into Planning for and Responding to Emergencies: A Toolkit." More »

Learn how your local health department can benefit from collaborative partnerships related to the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) with 12, easy-to-digest five minute videos. This presentation illuminates the "story behind the story" for 12 SNS-related collaborative efforts across the country in a fast-paced, thought-provoking format.

As an Ignite Presentation during the 2013 Public Health Preparedness Summit, this session was based on the Ignite and Pecha Kucha formats that are often used by the technology community to share ideas and pitches.  The Health and Disability project of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is proud to sponsor the Health and Disability Learning Community. The initial module of the learning community is focusing on ways to enhance emergency planning and preparedness activities that engage and include people with disabilities.

The learning community encourages information sharing among a wide range of audiences, including health departments, people with disabilities, disability organizations, academic institutions, and NACCHO.

Members of the learning community have access to online collaboration space which is used for discussions and the ability to upload and download resources and tools. Community members also share and learn together by engaging in conference calls and webinars.
