NACCHO partnered with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials to assemble the Mosquito Control Collaborative (MCC), which is funded by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. MCC is a broad-based task force comprised of representatives from state and local governmental agencies in addition to health, environmental, agricultural, and mosquito control organizations involved in mosquito control. More » The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the DEET Education Program have set April 18 as the deadline for this year's Fight the Bite Poster Contest. The contest is open to all U.S. fifth and sixth graders and encourages students to illustrate ways to protect themselves and their families from disease spread by mosquitoes and ticks. Winning posters from previous years, helpful hints, "Tip for Teachers," information about prizes, the entry form, and rules are at www.fightthebitecontest.org. Teachers, school nurses, public health educators and mosquito control professionals are encouraged to use winning posters for educational outreach and public service materials. During 1999 to 2008, 28,961 cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) disease were reported from 1,869 counties in 47 states and the District of Columbia. A new report in the April 2, 2010 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) finds that the stability in the reported incidence of WNV might represent an endemic level of transmission and stresses that surveillance is important for detecting and monitoring epidemics and targeting prevention and control.
