Training Opportunities

»          SIECUS HIV Prevention Education Training Opportunity

As part of their cooperative agreement with CDC-DASH, the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS) is funded to provide training related to HIV prevention education for youth for state and local education and health agencies across the country. We have developed five training programs that are listed below. If you have a group of education and/or health professionals that you would like to receive one of these trainings, please contact Kurt Conklin at (212) 819-9770, Ext. 322, or kconklin@siecus.org for further information.

What's the Dilly-Yo: Cultural Competence in Youth Culture examines the value of exploring youth culture, ways in which youth culture affects the decisions that young people make, and ways in which knowledge of youth culture can make HIV prevention programs targeted at young people more relevant and ultimately more effective. Participants have the opportunity to create an action plan detailing how they will apply what they have learned in their day-to-day work.

Together We Can: Advancing HIV Prevention Education focuses on how school health professionals can advance HIV prevention strategies and programs. This training provides professionals with up-to-date information on sexual behavior, HIV, and other STIs among adolescents. It focuses on research about adolescents most at risk, including adolescents who have sex with older male partners, adolescents who have multiple sexual partners, adolescents who begin sexual activity young, adolescents with a history of unprotected sex, young men who have sex with men, and young women who have sex with men who have sex with men. Participants then examine what the research says about HIV prevention and about strategies that have been shown to be effective in helping young people abstain from sexual intercourse, delay sexual intercourse, and otherwise prevent risky sexual behaviors.

Making the Most of Your 15 Minutes provides participants with information about the components of strong messages, a variety of methods for developing messages, and the opportunity to develop messages about their own HIV prevention efforts for youth.

Common Ground: Where Youth Development and HIV Prevention Education Meet helps education and health professionals incorporate the tenets of youth development into HIV prevention programming. Participants discover aspects of the youth development approach that are effective in reducing risky sexual behaviors, and develop ways to integrate the successful tenets of youth development into their own efforts to prevent HIV, STIs, unintended pregnancy, and other important health issues affecting youth.

Culturally Competent HIV Prevention Education examines different aspects of culture and how they affect HIV prevention. This training looks at the meaning, context, and impact of culture, as well as the role that culture plays in HIV, sexual health, healthcare, education, and prevention efforts. This training is designed to help build the capacity of professionals to consider issues of cultural competence for the diversity of adolescents in their HIV prevention programs.
