How much time does it take to go through the MAPP process?
NACCHO recommends about two years; however, the time varies depending on the community''s needs and the extent to which they modify the process. The first phase, Organizing for Success and Partnership Development, should take about a year, depending on the extent to which a diverse partnership of the local public health system is engaged. Getting the commitment and support from partners will set up the process for success later on down the line. As such, it is recommended that users put the time and energy needed in this phase to ensure success.

The Web site states that MAPP is an ongoing process. How does that work?
MAPP is described as a new way of doing the business of public health because it recognizes that public health is provided by more than just one agency and requires a systems approach to planning. It is ongoing because it should fundamentally change the way communities approach public health planning and the implementation of activities. After completing the first five phases, communities work together to address their strategic issues, moving the community closer to its "healthier" vision. In the action cycle, the MAPP committee continues to work together to plan, implement, and evaluate their work for continuous quality improvement.

Once an iteration of MAPP is complete, how much time should lapse before beginning the process again?
Generally, once the MAPP Committee feels the assessment data is out of date, they will want to move back through the MAPP process. The Organizing for Success phase will not take as long in the second iteration, because many of the partners are already engaged and there are more people to assist in bringing additional partners on board. In addition, users will have more knowledge about what works and what they should change. This experience is invaluable, and should cut down on the time needed to move through the process.
