Law is an important tool in public health practice. Public health law itself is an emerging discipline that combines elements from many areas of legal practice that are pertinent to the work of health departments. New partnerships between public health professionals and attorneys are emerging as they work jointly to balance individual rights and public responsibilities in responding to the complex public health challenges of the 21st century.
