Accreditation and QI, Michigan

<<Return to state map

In 1989, state technical assistance helped local health departments use the Assessment Protocol for Excellence in Public Health (APEXPH), and the results served as the basis for accreditation recommendations made in 1992.

The Michigan Accreditation Program assesses the ability of local health departments to meet minimum administrative capacity requirements as well as performance standards similar to the Operational Definition. All 45 local health departments are currently accredited.

Michigan is also a part of the Multi-State Learning Collaborative (MLC) project, which assesses quality improvement strategies to enhance the work of public health departments.

Tools and Resources

  • Visit the Michigan accreditation program website.
  • Visit the Office of Public Health Practice webpage on national accreditation and Michigan's health departments.
  • Read the crosswalk and accompanying tracking tool between Michigan LPH Accreditation Program and PHAB’s national accreditation program.
    • To aid in understanding how Michigan’s ongoing statewide accreditation work may be used to support and assist in meeting national voluntary accreditation through PHAB, the Michigan Public Health Training Center funded a crosswalk of the two programs. The crosswalk was developed by Mary Kushion, MSA.
  • Download the 2008 Michigan accreditation tool, which provides guidance to local health departments in all phases of accreditation.
