Accreditation and QI, New Jersey

In 1997, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Local Public Health, initiated a process that has led to the redefinition of performance standards and recognized activities for local health departments.

In 2003, the state Public Health Council adopted the Public Health Performance Practice Standards of Performance. The Standards, which ensure the provision of an array of public health services to all citizens of New Jersey, are based on several documents, including the National Public Health Performance Standards and the Ten Essential Public Health Services.

New Jersey also participates in the Multi-State Learning Collaborative (MLC) project, which assesses quality improvement strategies to enhance the work of public health departments.
