With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, NACCHO created the Accreditation Preparation and Quality Improvement (QI) Demonstration Sites Project to give local health departments (LHDs) from across the country the opportunity to start preparing for accreditation. From November 2007 through May 2008, 10 LHDs participated in the first round of the project, where the sites conducted self-assessments using the
LHD Self-Assessment Tool for Accreditation Preparation to identify areas for improvement and then implemented QI projects to address priority areas identified by the self-assessment.
From April 2008 through November 2008, the project was expanded for a second round and included 56 participating LHDs. Of the 56 sites, 31 LHDs worked individually to implement QI projects much like the round one sites, while the remaining 25 LHDs worked in five regional collaboratives. These collaboratives conducted self-assessments to decide on priority improvement areas to address and then engaged in planning processes to develop formal mechanisms of collaboration for future work.
