Accreditation and QI, Texas

<<Return to state map

In 2007, the Texas Association of Local Health Officials (TALHO) convened an Accreditation Committee to examine the feasibility and interest in pursuing local public health accreditation in Texas. The decision was made to implement a statewide process for local health department (LHD) accreditation that: 1) addresses urban and rural health, as well as the diversity in scope and scale of departmental structures; 2) necessitates reasonable implementation costs; and 3) is scalable depending on size and interest. The Public Health Accreditation Council of Texas (PHACT) was established in early 2008 to meet these criterion and is comprised of many statewide partners:

  • Texas Association of Local Health Officials;
  • Texas Schools of Public Health;
  • Texas Health Institute;
  • Texas Medical Association;
  • Texas Public Health Association;
  • Texas Department of State Health Services; and
  • Local Health Departments.

PHACT's goal is to assure and enhance the quality of public health in Texas, as well as to prepare LHDs for voluntary national accreditation in 2011.
