Demonstration Site Case Studies

It is difficult to visualize a community process of developing, organizing, and implementing a plan. Most people would have trouble picturing how all of the structured conversations, surveys, research tasks, committee meetings, evaluations, and reports would unfold.

In 2001, NACCHO selected nine communities to serve as demonstration sites for the newly developed MAPP process. The sites represented diverse population sizes, jurisdictions, local health department structures, and geographical characteristics. The MAPP demonstration site process, now officially ended, was designed to demonstrate and test the use of the MAPP process.

NACCHO was able to follow six of the nine original communities through all of the MAPP phases. The case studies depict how these health departments and the communities they serve fit MAPP to their own circumstances. The hope is that a variety of public health practitioners—local health department directors, planning directors, state health department executives, local government officials, or community leaders—will find this collection of case studies useful if they decide to incorporate MAPP into their efforts.
