National Public Health Improvement Initiative

Local and state health departments funded under the Affordable Care Act's National Public Health Improvement Initiative (NPHII) will receive direct capacity building assistance and support in the form of TA, training, tools, resources, and support that will enhance health department capacity to improve internal practices, increase efficiencies and develop and support new infrastructure and systems to increase their effectiveness and efficiency, subsequently enhancing the public health infrastructure and improving health. A major component of public health infrastructure capacity building assistance focuses on health information technology. NACCHO, in partnership with ASTHO and the CDC, will work together to improve local and state infrastructure to develop and operate use interoperable systems that reach across clinical and public health systems and that utilize electronic health record data; vital statistics; disease outbreak investigations data sets; hospital discharges and behavioral risk data, etc. Best practices, strategic plans, along with business processes and technical requirements for various interoperable systems are provided below.
