| What is the time commitment for the orientation?
The overall time commitment for the orientation is 100 hours over a 12 month period. This includes time spent doing the pre-workshops assessments, the in-person workshops, as well as group conference calls, webcasts, and coaching done throughout the year. Some fellows may find themselves committing more time to the program depending on their knowledge level and individual learning contract components.
How many days can I expect to be away from the office, including travel?
In total, you can expect to be away from the office attending the in-person workshops for approximately eight days over the course of the year. This does include travel time and may vary depending on the location of the fellow.
How much time can I expect to be working on assignments during the course of the orientation?
During the course of the orientation program (one year), you can expect to spend approximately five hours per month working on assignments for the Survive and Thrive project. This will include teleconferences with your peer group, coaching conversations, webcasts, as well as individual work towards your learning contract.
What requirements must be met to successfully complete the orientation?
To successfully complete the orientation program, it is expected that fellows will complete the following:
- Complete the pre-workshop assessment activities;
- Participate in all in-person workshops;
- Participate in the coaching relationship;
- Participate in group conference calls;
- Participate in all required webcasts; and
- Complete tasks on their individualized learning contracts to a degree satisfactory to themselves and their coach.
In addition, fellows will be expected to complete all evaluation components of the program.
What materials will be provided for the orientation?
After fellows are accepted into Survive and Thrive, they will receive a welcome packet that includes all necessary information for the orientation as well the books required by the curriculum and instructions as to how to complete the pre-workshop assessments
Can I receive any CEUs or college credits for completing the orientation?
At this time, we will not be offering CEUs or college credits for completing Survive and Thrive. However, NACCHO is working with the CDC to make CEUs available to various professions in 2010–2011.
Does the orientation assist with any certification process as an administrator in my state?
At this time, Survive and Thrive cannot assist with any certification process.
How much does the orientation cost?
Tuition for the 2010–2011 Survive and Thrive program is $2,500.00. The tuition covers the cost of the components described above plus books, printed materials, and travel (includes airfare/hotel) to and from the workshops. The total estimated value of one individual's participation is $7,500.00
How long is each workshop?
Workshop 1 will total 2 days.
Workshop 2 will total 2 days.
Workshop 3 will total 1 day.

How many people participate in Survive and Thrive?
Each group of fellows (cohort) will consist of approximately 30 fellows.
Who is eligible to participate in the orientation?
There are several qualifications for participation in Survive and Thrive. To be eligible, the applicant must meet the following conditions:
- Currently be the administrative head and top executive of a local health department, as defined by NACCHO;
- Have served as an LHO for no more than two years from the application deadline date;
- Be able to participate in all three in-person workshops, as well as arranged webcasts and teleconferences; and
- Have the technological capabilities to participate in the program.
What technology is needed to participate in the orientation?
In order to fully participate in Survive and Thrive, fellows must have access to a telephone line and a computer with the following technological capabilities:
- 266 MHz Intel Pentium processor or better;
- 128 MB or more of RAM;
- 200 MB free on the hard disk;
- 33 Kbps or better modem, cable, or LAN connection to the Internet;
- 16-bit or better sound card and speakers;
- 65,000-color or better video display card;
- 15-inch color monitor or larger;
- CD-ROM or DVD drive;
- Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, Windows 2000, or Windows XP (with Microsoft Office suite);
- Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher or Netscape Navigator 6.x or higher;
- RealPlayer 8 Basic or higher; and
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher.
