The Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC) and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) recently collaborated to conduct an epidemiology capacity assessment in 27 big city health departments. The report addresses the capacity of big city local health departments to monitor health status, investigate problems and conduct research and evaluation as it relates to chronic disease, environmental health, preparedness, maternal and child health, mental health, and infectious disease. It also has implications for funding, hiring, workforce development and policy.
