WEBINAR: Syphilis Testing and Treatment in Emergency Departments and Jails

Access to STI care must expand out from the traditional public and private clinic structure and take services to populations who are not engaged in STI testing and treatment. Keys to that expansion are moving services to places where there may be a high burden of infections but populations where there may be low engagement with traditional health care such as emergency departments (EDs) and jails.

In 2024, NACCHO conducted surveys to understand how emergency departments and jails in 35 jurisdictions are providing syphilis testing and treatment alone or in partnership with the local health department (LHD). This included a survey of LHDs on their partnerships with EDs and jails in those jurisdictions and surveys of ED and jail staff on their policies and practices for syphilis testing and treatment.

This webinar will highlight the great work of the Marion County Public Health Department to successfully develop partnerships with their local jail and EDs to provide syphilis testing and treatment in those settings. The webinar will also include a review of NACCHO’s surveys on the current testing and treatment landscape.

The webinar will take place on February 20th at 2pm Eastern. To register, please click here.

Syphilis Community of Practice: Connect with your peers to discuss addressing syphilis in your community!

The Syphilis CoP will include discussions of congenital syphilis and the broader implications of untreated syphilis across various populations and communities including ciswomen, MSM, and American Indian/Alaska Natives.

These sessions will allow local health department staff to hear about the work of others and collaborate to enhance their syphilis intervention strategies. CoP meetings will start in February 2025, meeting on the second Thursday of every other month via Zoom for 1.5 hours.

To join, fill out this interest form by Tuesday, January 20, 2025. For questions, reach out to STI Senior Program Analyst Sonia Almonte.
