NACCHO’s newly developed Local Public Health Policy and Practice Scholars Program attracted close to 70 applicants with diverse academic interests from across the country. With such high interest and demand for local public health experience, NACCHO expanded its program to accommodate more scholars in a wider variety of focus areas than previously stated. This Friday, NACCHO will host the kick-off for this program with a 3-hour orientation session where students local to the Washington, DC area will join in-person at NACCHO’s office and scholars from other regions will participate via video conference.
This program was designed as a guided, academic, practice-based opportunity for graduate level students to work on policy and practice issues impacting public health at the local level. The program allows for students to work remotely and independently, while being paired up with a NACCHO staff member to provide guidance and support. Scholars vary in their level of professional experience—some are just getting familiar with public health practice and others enrolled in executive-level programs with more than 20 years of experience in the field. The diversity of experience and interests will lend itself well for an exciting and dynamic learning community. Students will complete projects in focus areas to include, but not limited to: public health preparedness, pandemic influenza, environmental health, vector control, environmental health security, infectious disease, chronic disease, tobacco control, public health law, community health, the role of pharmacy in public health, the Medical Reserve Corps, and health communications.
