According to an article by The Washington Post, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 24 expanded upon its 2014 proposal for a new food nutrition label. In addition to including the amount of “added sugars” to food labels, the agency would also like to incorporate the percentage the sugar contributes to a person’s daily recommended intake.
FDA plans to establish 50 grams of added sugar as the daily recommended consumption for an average adult. This means that the label of a 20-ounce soda containing 66 grams of added sugar would show that the product is 132% of the daily recommended value – more sugar than what average person should consume in a day. FDA hopes that by displaying this information, people will better understand how sugar contributes to caloric intake. It says that consumers will be able to make more informed dietary decisions.
The FDA is accepting comments on its latest proposal and they must be submitted by October 12.
