Flash Flooding and Mudslides in Southern California: SITREP and Resources

Jan 10, 2018 | Katie Dwyer

1/11/18 – Rain has subsided in Southern California and the National Weather Service is expecting clear weather over the next day. Rail and highway closures remain in some areas, and pockets of power outages continue in Santa Barbara, LA County, and Ventura Counties. A boil water notice is in effect for the Montecito Water District due to damage to water infrastructure from debris.

1/10/18 – Heavy rains and thunderstorms are impacting Southern California, posing a threat of flash flooding and mudslides where wildfires have burned much of the vegetation and structures. Mandatory evacuations are in place for some residents in Santa Barbara County, as well as some areas in the cities of Burbank and Sunland. Several people have died as a result of mudslides and flowing debris. Current infrastructure impacts from the storm include rail and highway closures and power and natural gas outages.

Resources:

Ready.gov has a webpage of information about what to do before, during, and after a landslide or mudslide.

The Santa Barbara County Health Department has resources and information on their website for residents dealing with recovery from wildfires.

CDC has compiled general information on mudslides and landslides on their website.

The Red Cross has a landslide webpage with information about what to do before, during, and after a landslide.

If you are in the impacted area, you can also contact your local health department for information and resources.

If you have questions or mudslide/landslide preparedness, response, and recovery resources that you would like to share, please contact NACCHO at [email protected]
