From the Field Report on Hurricane Recovery Reflections

Oct 11, 2018

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) worked with NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to publish a “dispatch” in NACCHO’s From the Field column in the journal Health Security. The report details NYC DOHMH’s reflections on the first-ever public health deployments in support of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands after the 2017 hurricane season. It provides advice to other health departments who want to develop a process for deploying public health response teams to disaster affected communities. The article is now live and, due to the ongoing storm responses in the country, has been declared open access for the next 30 days.

Health Security
Health Security (formerly Biosecurity and Bioterrorism) is a peer-reviewed journal providing research and essential guidance for the protection of people’s health before and after epidemics or disasters, and for ensuring that communities are resilient to major challenges. The journal explores the issues posed by disease outbreaks and epidemics; natural disasters; biological, chemical, and nuclear accidents or deliberate threats; food-borne outbreaks; and other emergencies.

“From the Field”
NACCHO’s standing column, From the Field, focuses on the local experience in responding to and preparing for disasters, epidemics, and other major health challenges. The deputy director of the Big Cities Health Coalition serves as editor and coordinator for this column, which is published three to four times per year (the journal is published six times per year). Articles should focus on the local health department’s challenges and solutions, an analysis of a problem, general lessons, or experience managing a health security issue.
