Governor Baker Proclaims Saturday, April 6 as Massachusetts Medical Reserve Corps Day!

Apr 05, 2019 | Kim Rodgers

Below is a press release published on March 29, 2019 by the Town of Westford Board of Health in Massachussetts.

On Thursday March 28, Governor Baker issued a proclamation to designate Saturday, April 6, 2019 as the first-ever Massachusetts Medical Reserve Corps Day.

This special recognition honors volunteers in 38 MRC units across the Bay State who serve the public during times of greatest need, as well as providing community service throughout the year. MA units in 2018 responded to disasters caused by gas explosions, a measles exposure, a meningitis outbreak, severe weather events requiring emergency shelter and warming center staffing, and other deployments.

MA MRC Day coincides with a major event to which the press is invited. Middlesex D.A. Marian Ryan is delivering the 9AM plenary address to 170 participants at Region 3 MRC Training Day. Career radio newsman Rod Fritz is providing the lunchtime keynote. Eleven seminars throughout the day cover a wide range of topics to maximize MRC skills in disaster response. (Logistics about this event are provided separately.)

The April 6 event is hosted by Middlesex Community College at its Bedford Campus, through their Homeland Security program. The director of that program has two close family members who were seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombings. MRC volunteers were among the responders to render care at the marathon, and they continue to serve annually along the course and at the finish line.
