The following is a digest of DHS reports related to the Healthcare and Public Health Sector for December 17^th-31^st, 2013.

1. December 31, WUSA 9 Washington, D.C. – (Maryland) Car hits CVS store in Rockville. A CVS in Rockville, Maryland, will remain closed until repairs are made after a car crashed into the store December 31 and damaged the building. Source
   
2. December 31, U-T San Diego – (California) Fire causes $200K damage to clinic. Firefighters responded to a December 31 fire at a medical clinic in the El Cajon Square complex that caused about $200,000 in damage. Authorities believe the cause of the fire may have been electrical. Source
   
3. December 30, Denver Post – (Colorado) Poudre Valley Hospital patients possibly exposed to hepatitis C. Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins sent letters December 30 urging 210 patients who received IV painkillers between September 2011 and August 2012 to get tested for hepatitis C after the hospital discovered an infected former employee used needles to divert painkillers for personal use. 4. December 30, Associated Press – (Oklahoma) Okla. agents seize doctor’s records after deaths. A former Oklahoma City-based doctor was arrested on nine counts of murder and other charges after eight patients died of prescription drug overdoses and another allegedly caused a fatal traffic accident. Authorities seized records from the doctor’s former clinic and believe he prescribed over 12,000 controlled dangerous substance prescriptions during the time he was under investigation. Source
   
5. December 30, Associated Press – (South Carolina) Laptop with data of South Carolina insurance pool customers stolen. The South Carolina Health Insurance Pool notified 3,432 members that their personal information, including Social Security numbers, were on a password-protected laptop that was stolen from an independent auditor’s car October 16. Source
   
6. December 27, South Jersey Times – (New Jersey) Inspira: No patient information on stolen computer. Officials from Inspira Medical Center Vineland in New Jersey reported that a December 23 theft of a computer from the hospital’s radiology department did not contain patient information. Authorities continue to investigate the incident. Source
   
7. December 27, Charlotte Observer – (North Carolina) 3-alarm fire damages Central Avenue clinic. A 3-alarm fire at the Keith Clinic Estramonte Chiropractic in Charlotte December 27 caused severe damage to the clinic. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Source
   
8. December 25, Riverside Press-Enterprise – (California) CVS ordered to pay fines totaling more than $658,000 for pharmacy violations. CVS Pharmacy was ordered to pay Alameda, Riverside, and San Diego counties fines totaling more than $658,000 to settle a lawsuit claiming they violated California laws after a judge found that their pharmacists failed to provide proper consultation for patients who filled prescriptions. 9. December 24, South Jersey Times – (New Jersey) Computer with possible personal data stolen from Inspira Medical Center Vineland, police say. Inspira Medical Center Vineland is investigating the theft of a computer from their facility December 23 that may have contained password-protected personal records and information. Source
   
10. December 23, KVVU 5 Las Vegas – (Nevada) Report: 59 test positive for TB in hospital outbreak. The Southern Nevada Health District released a preliminary report December 23 on the tuberculosis (TB) outbreak at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas stating that tests identified two active cases and 59 other positive cases of latent TB infection. The health district believes the disease may have stemmed from an expectant mother who was ill before being admitted to the hospital in May. Source
11. December 21, U.S. Food and Drug Administration – (National) FDA announces voluntary nationwide recall of all non-expired sterile drugs from Abrams Royal Compounding Pharmacy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notified hospitals, health care professionals, and patients nationwide of a voluntary recall of all non-expired Abrams Compounding Pharmacy produced and distributed drug products due to the potential of contamination. The drug products were distributed between June 2013 and December 2013. Source
12. December 23, Southern California City News Service – (California) Long Beach assisted-living facility fire injures 3, 60 evacuated. A December 22 fire at The Chateau assisted-living facility in Long Beach prompted the evacuation of 60 residents and left three people with injuries. Source
13. December 22, Associated Press – (South Carolina) Resident arrested after South Carolina assisted living shootout. A resident from a South Carolina assisted living center was arrested after he fired a gun at the Orangeburg facility and then shot at responding police officers. Source
14. December 19, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal – (Texas) 12 injured after explosion prompts partial evacuation of University Medical Center. Workers using a torch attempting repairs to a water pipe ignited a nearby pure oxygen line at the Texas Tech University Medical Center building in Lubbock December 19, injuring 12 people and evacuating part of the building. 15. December 19, U.S. Department of Labor – (New York) Rite Aid cited by U.S. Labor Department’s OSHA for safety hazards at Kings Highway store in Brooklyn, NY; proposed fines total more than $83,000. Pennsylvania-based Rite Aid was cited by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration December 19 for repeat and serious safety violations after an inspection of the retailer’s store in Brooklyn, New York. Proposed fines total more than $83,000.Source
16. December 19, KHOU 11 Houston – (Texas) H1N1 kills 6 people, leaves 14 critically ill in greater Houston area. Houston health officials confirmed December 19 that 6 deaths and 14 severe illnesses in the Houston area were caused by the H1N1 flu strain Source
17. December 18, NBC News – (National) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issues warning about painful virus from mosquitoes. The CDC confirmed that 10 patients on the French side of St. Martin in the Caribbean have contracted the Chikungunya virus, which causes headaches, joint pain, rashes, and fevers. The CDC warned that the virus’s appearance in the Western Hemisphere means that it was very likely to enter the United States. Source
18. December 17, CNN – (Nevada) One person, gunman dead in shooting at Reno medical building. A gunman opened fire on the third floor of the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno December 16, killing himself, another individual, and injuring two others. Source
