The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is implementing a major reorganization to enhance its technology, cybersecurity, data, and artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and policy functions. This restructuring will involve renaming the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) to the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and ONC (ASTP/ONC).
Under this new structure, ASTP/ONC will assume oversight of technology, data, and AI policy, integrating roles such as Chief Technology Officer, Chief Data Officer, and Chief AI Officer into its framework. Additionally, the public-private cybersecurity initiative known as the 405(d) Program will transition from the Assistant Secretary for Administration (ASA) to the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), aligning it with other health sector cybersecurity activities.
The reorganization also introduces an Office of Digital Services and reinstates the Chief Technology Officer role within ASTP/ONC. Micky Tripathi, the current National Coordinator, will be appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and Acting Chief AI Officer. The department is actively seeking candidates for the new positions of Chief Technology Officer, Chief AI Officer, and Chief Data Officer.
This reorganization aims to better position HHS to address emerging technological challenges and opportunities in the healthcare sector.
