NACCHO, in collaboration with CDC’s Project Firstline, is excited to announce workshops designed to empower local health department (LHD) staff to deliver effective infection prevention and control (IPC) education to healthcare facility partners in their communities. In our work with Project Firstline, NACCHO provides critical training, resources, and capacity-building support to equip public health professionals and frontline healthcare workers with the knowledge and tools they need to prevent the spread of infectious diseases across U.S. healthcare settings.
The IPC Training Workshops will build on content from two new self-paced online courses designed for LHD staff who train healthcare facilities on IPC. Both courses are available for free on NACCHO University:
- IPC Fundamentals of Infection Control: This introductory course covers the essential concepts of IPC necessary for managing infectious diseases in healthcare environments. Topics include various types of infectious agents, transmission methods, and both bodily and environmental germ reservoirs. Geared toward LHD staff who are new to clinical settings or IPC, or those in need of a refresher, the course focuses on building foundational knowledge to help LHDs train healthcare facility staff effectively, rather than assessing current IPC practices.
- Principles of Adult Learning: This course explores effective strategies for training planning and facilitation, learning modalities, audience analysis, and evaluation, with a focus on adult learners. Designed for LHD staff training healthcare facility personnel in IPC, this course complements the IPC Fundamentals series and is aimed at supporting LHD staff in utilizing Project Firstline resources.
The workshop will enhance and expand upon the Project Firstline courses and the outcomes will help NACCHO develop structured learning materials and design interactive scenarios for LHD staff. Additionally, after the conclusion of the workshop, NACCHO will develop supplementary resources to accompany the courses, including key takeaways and practical tools, to support LHDs in delivering effective training to healthcare facility partners.
Workshop Training Objectives:
- Building IPC Knowledge & Competency: Strengthen foundational understanding of infection prevention and control principles to enhance training effectiveness for healthcare facility partners.
- Applying Adult Learning Strategies: Explore techniques for engaging adult learners, improving facilitation skills, and adapting training to diverse audiences.
- Developing Practical Training Tools: Create structured learning materials, interactive scenarios, and job aids to support effective IPC education.
- Encouraging Peer Collaboration: Foster networking among LHD staff to share best practices, challenges, and innovative approaches for IPC training.
- Enhancing Training Impact & Sustainability: Identify strategies for evaluating training effectiveness and sustaining IPC education efforts within local health departments.
- Contributing to NACCHO’s IPC Resources: Provide insights and feedback to inform the development of supplementary tools and future training initiatives.
