Local health departments (LHDs) are the chief health strategists in their communities and can play a vital and diverse role in healthcare-associated infection (HAI) and antibiotic resistance (AR) prevention and response. In 2019, NACCHO conducted, for the first time, a survey to assess the extent to which LHDs engage in HAI/AR activities, explore existing LHD partner engagement, examine the role that LHDs play in outbreak response, and evaluate LHD capacity and infrastructure in HAI/AR prevention and control. This article outlines the methods, results, and implications of the survey.
