Public Health 3.0: A Call to Action to Create a 21st Century Public Health Infrastructure is a recent and welcome model for achieving community health. However, many local health departments have been taking the lessons of Public Health 3.0 to heart for several years, with exceptional results. The Health Department of Northwest Michigan has recently issued Mancelona Michigan: A Case Study in Collaborative Care, which tells the story of their work in the town of Mancelona throughout two decades.
The successful initiative increased high school graduation rates and other academic indicators via improved healthcare access by their department and partners. Their work also touches on some current/prospective policy issues, including Medicaid match funding for school health centers.
