NACCHO Awards Funding to Address the Needs of People with Disabilities in COVID-19 Local Preparedness Planning, Mitigation and Recovery Efforts

— Local Health Departments in Arizona, Louisiana, Michigan, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington State Received Awards —

Washington, DC, December 8, 2020 - The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), the voice of the country’s nearly 3,000 local health departments, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Human Development and Disability, has awarded 10 local health departments funding to address the needs of people with disabilities in COVID-19 planning, mitigation, and recovery efforts.

The project is designed to enhance local health department capacity to effectively address the needs of people with disabilities when planning and responding to outbreaks, pandemics, and other national emergencies.

Local health departments awardees, which will receive up to $83,000 for the project are:

  • Pima County Health Department, AZ
  • Philadelphia Department of Public Health, PA
  • Public Health - Seattle & King County, WA
  • City of New Orleans - Health Department, LA
  • Kittitas County Public Health Department, WA
  • Utah County Health Department, UT
  • Williamson County and Cities Health District, TX
  • Marion County Health and Human Services, OR
  • Three Rivers Health District, VA
  • Kent County Health Department, MI

The main activities of the project include: (1) embedding disability specialists, who will serve as subject matter experts, in local public health emergency preparedness planning and response programs; (2) strengthening partnerships between local public health and community-based organizations that serve people with disabilities; and (3) updating local emergency response plans to better serve the needs of people with disabilities during outbreaks, pandemics, and other national emergencies.
