Last week, NACCHO joined a coalition led by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids in publishing a print ad in support of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) proposed rules prohibiting the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. The ad ran in the print version of the New York Times, The Washington Post, and Politico on May 4, following FDA’s announcement of the proposed rules. The ad subsequently ran in several dozen additional print publications.
More information on the proposed rules is available from NACCHO here.
NACCHO has consistently supported banning menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars as important to improve public health, and has repeatedly urged FDA to take such action. FDA is accepting public comment on the proposed rules now through July 5, 2022. NACCHO will submit comments on the proposed rules and local health departments encouraged to do the same. Comments can be submitted regarding flavored cigars here and menthol cigarettes here. Once the comment period is closed, FDA will review and consider all comments before deciding whether to issue final rules.
